May was an exciting month for the CTHS as after many months of hard work and dedication to completely renovating and updating the Museum, they held the grand reopening of the museum on May 6th. The event was well attended, and many enthusiastic attendees positively commented on the renovations.
Saturday, June 6th the CTHS held their Annual Garden Party. This was also another well attended event with perfect, sunny weather. A Memorial Tree was planted and dedicated to the memory of Greg Gill, a long-time resident of Crosswicks and long-time member of the CTHS who passed recently. Guest Speaker, Larry Kuser of Fernbrook Farm spoke on The Importance of Trees to Songbirds and Caterpillars. There was also a silent auction and light refreshments served.
The Museum will have open house hours from 2:00pm-4:00pm on the second and fourth Sundays. Those dates include June 25th, July 2nd, July 16th, August 6th, August 20, Sept 3rd, and Sept 17th. The July 16th open House will include guest speaker Richard Moody and the Aug 20th and Sept 17th meeting will have a guest speaker to be determined as part of CTHS Summer Speaker Series. Speakers begin at 2:15pm.
The CTHS looks to expand the community’s access to the history of our community and part of that is to help with preserving historic structures. Two such structures that are being threatened include the 1740 Black (or Decker )House with its rare historic patterned brick work located on the former OYCC property slated for a warehouse and the Bullock Mansion, located on the Crosspoint Church property. Both are endangered structures with developers and or property owners looking to “relocate” or demolish them. One to make room for a 1.3 plus million square foot warehouse, the other to make way for parking lot expansion. More info on these structures is available at the CTHS website.
The CTHS always welcomes new members, and they make it simple with three ways to join. Go to their website at www.chesterfieldhistoricalsoc.organd click on Membership to find the option that best fits your needs. The cost for an Individual Membership is $20 or a Family Membership is just $30.00. Also, donations can also be made using the website.
The Crosswicks Library Company, located at Main Street, Crosswicks recently underwent some major renovations. Those renovations included the replacement of the HVAC system, painting of the exterior of the building, various parking lot improvements and clearing of the area behind the building for library use. The final project to be done is the restoration and repair of the old firehouse bell.
These renovations and repairs were made possible by the generosity of the Brick Foundation, the generosity of community members who donated to the Friendship Fund and the hard work of the local Scout troops who completed the work on the parking lot and the clearing.
Stop by the library, check out the improvements and renovations. While there find out about programming offered and check out a book or two.
